GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Don't Delay:  Prepare Today!  The CERT Program helps train volunteers to assist the community when a disastrous event overwhelms or delays the community's professional response. CERT members can assist others by applying basic response and organization skills following a disaster until help arrives.     SPECIAL EVENTS

    Salem area residents now have access to online crime mapping services via a new service provided by the Salem Police Department.  Working with nearly 1,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States, www.CrimeReports.com is an online communication venue for law enforcement to disseminate neighborhood crime information quickly and efficiently.

  • WALKING SAFETY REMINDERS

    Whether you walk alone or with a group, make safety a priority.  To stay safe follow these tips

    • Carry ID:  Your name, address, and a friend's or relative's phone number.
    • Medical Alert:  Wear a medical alert bracelet or necklace if you have a heath condition that could result in an emergency.
    • Buddy up:  When possible walk with a companion.
    • Footwear:  Use proper footwear to help avoid slipping.
    • Cell Phone: Consider carrying a cell phone.
    • Traffic: Walk or move on the shoulder of the roadway facing traffic which may approach from the opposit direction and upon meeting an oncoming vechile.  Use sidewalks when available.  Don't assume a car will automatically stop for you.
    • Be Visible:  Wear reflective materials.
    • Whistle or Noisemaker:  These devices may help ward off potential attackers.  
    • Know your Route:  Use familiar areas and alter your route from time to time.  Be observant know the location of telephones, businesses and stores.  If possible tell someone where you are going and for how long.
    • Avoid potintially dangerous areas:  Deserted streets, overgrown trails and unlit areas at night.  Walk clear of parked cars and bushes, where people may hide.  Headphones diminish your awareness of your surroundings.
    • BE SAFE!
